Volunteering at The New Day Children’s Centre

The New Day Children’s Centre offers a wonderful opportunity for a volunteer to work in Ethiopia.

Bahir Dar

Bahir Dar is the regional capital of the Amhara region and at 1800 meters above sea level the climate is excellent. Situated on Lake Tana (the largest lake in Ethiopia) you have easy access to the monasteries and the Blue Nile Falls, the second largest waterfalls in Africa. Ethiopia is a very cheap place to live and being a large town it is possible to buy most foods.

Conditions

You are welcome to live at the Centre where you will have your own room with ensuite bathroom. Accommodation and electricity is covered, however the post is voluntary and therefore there is no salary. You are welcome to eat with the children 2 times a day. All travel costs are all to be covered by the volunteer.

 Work

Depending on your skills there is a wide variety of ways in which you can help the Centre. There is always a need to help the students with their English, both reading and writing, however many other ways in which you could help at the Centre. Any work that you will be asked to do will be discussed prior to your departure and training will be provided as necessary. Listed below are some examples of work that previous volunteers have been involved in:

  • Helping the teachers improve their lesson planning and developing their teaching skills.
  • Developing teaching resources to be used with the students.
  • Helping the cooks prepare meals.
  • Improving the facilities at the Centre.
  • Helping the students make crafts to sell.
  • Installing a water tank.
  • Painting the centre.
  • Fund raising.
  • Teaching gardening skills.
